Is ascension physical death?

In spiritual circles and people who believe something big is coming in 2012.... the word ascension is used alot, i know what the term means..... but when people use it in regards to 2012 etc, does it mean death of the physical body, and our soul ascends to the next dimension?....... or does it mean an enlightening of the mes, but we wil still stay in the physical body?
