Why do some people equate opposition with hatred?

Just because I oppose your attempts to control my government, clify gays as second-cl citizens, teach creationism as if it's science, and tell a woman what she can do with her own body doesn't mean I hate you. It just means I disagree and will oppose your efforts. Why do you think this means I hate?
