Mel Gibson's Beaver: Good? Bad?

I saw the trailer a while ago but just now decided I should ask people about it. Is this just Mel Gibson saying screw it, I need the money and my career is over anyway and i'm just an old racist burnout...... Or is this the redemption of a man who was once capable of true greatness (Martin Riggs anyone?! or idk William Wallace?) Let me know what you think because I think this movie looks briliant and will hopefully suprise others and hopefully Mel himself into seeing that he can still be a wonderfull and good man and not that racist drunk actor people know now.
