I'm becoming a little hopeless...?

Well, I think that if all of the people you know have such nice things to say about you then they're all probably right so why don't you find a guy that you like and ask him out. You sound like a great catch so he should say yes. Secondly, your guy friend could be right. The way I always see it is that if important people in your life see you as one way then that's most likely the way you are. There's no way you can trust your own judgement of how others see you because it will always be biased. Even if he is right, maybe he just means that you're pretty and well rounded so you're intimidating in the sense that guys are afraid to ask you out because they're scared that there's a good chance they'll be rejected.
